![]() Jaci Velasquez | Bible Study Just A Prayer Away "Just a Prayer Away" is a song with a powerful message. The lyrics may seem simple enough at first glance, but it provides a profound truth about life in Christ. Prayer is perhaps the most powerful tool we have. Through prayer we can speak to the Almighty God, He who formed the earth and gave us life. Some people treat prayer carelessly. They treat God like a department store Santa Claus, asking him for a few things without showing any sign of respect or reverence. Jesus knew the power and seriousness of prayer. He would often times go into the wilderness to pray away from the busy-ness of his life. You can read about a few of the occasions in Matthew 14:23, Mark 1:35, and Mark 6:46. In Luke 6:12, we find that Jesus even "continued all night in prayer." He had a task of unparalleled importance, and He knew He could only endure the trials that would come upon Him if He prayed. Finally, Christ's darkest hour was upon Him. The time was approaching when He would be betrayed and denied by those who were closest with Him. He would be taken away and beaten by the nation He selected as His chosen people. As John would later write, "He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him," (John 1:11). Not even a man on death row could have such a clearer understand of the approaching hour of death than Jesus, God in human form. Matthew 26 details the account as Jesus lead his disciples into the Garden of Gethsemane. Such pressure was upon Him, not even the Son of God could bear it with a strait face. His disciples could see how "He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed," (v37). Fear must have gripped them to see their beloved teacher in so much anguish over what was to them an uncertain future. Jesus admitted to His beloved disciples, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me" (v38). In His darkest hour, Jesus fell on His face before His Father. He even asked if there was another way, asking, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will," (v39). Jesus goes back to His disciples, to find that they have not even been able to stay away with Him. He has instructed them so much, yet they cannot even obey Him to keep watch. Read chapter 26. Do not be hurried, but take time to think about what it says, how it has an impact on your life. If Jesus found power and strength to endure His crucifixion in prayer, what kind of power does it hold for your daily life? Remember prayer, no matter what happens in life. If things are going well, thank Him for it. If the world seems to collapsing upon you, pray for strength. The Lord of the universe is just a prayer away.
