Child of Mine

"Child of Mine" is a song sung from the perspective of God. For that reason, Jaci was a little apprehensive about it at first, but she later understood the value of its lyrics. The song addresses the children of God. Often the idea that we are God's children is clichéd (overused), and we overlook its great significance.

John 1:10-13 (New King James Version) says,

He [Jesus, God the Son,] was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

This passage tells us that Jesus came to the very world which He spoke into existence (see Genesis 1). The Lord God, who made all reality, entered the very reality He created. He had more power than we could ever imagine, but He became a human being! The same God who spoke to Job through thunder, the same God who plagued the land of Egypt, the same God who made kingdoms rise and fall...He became a humble human being!

John explains to us in this passage how even though He made the world, those who were in it refused to believe who He was. In the times of the Old Testament, He sent prophets who spoke His words to the people that they should turn to Him, but the stubborn, rebellious people killed those messengers from God. When He became a man and walked among those people, the beat Him and killed Him as well.

The story does not end there, as you probably know. Jesus Christ rose from the dead on the third day, defeating death and evil once and for all time! If we look back at the passage in John, we learn that those of us who accept Him as the resurrected God the Son will become His children! It further explains that this is no privilege, but a right to all who believe! Isn't that incredible? It says we have been born of God; this is the second birth Jesus spoke of in John 3:1 when He said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

In "Child of Mine," Jaci sings how God wants to refresh us. She sings about someone who has known God but has somehow forgotten about Him and has "backslid"--has turned away from God. When we turn away from Him, God wants with all His Heart to help us, because apart from Him we are powerless and defenseless. He is our Father, and what father can stand to see His children in danger? He is there to rescue us! It doesn't matter what we've done. He loves us and will welcome us back with open arms and with tears in His eyes if we just cry out for His help.

Jaci sings, "It's all about total surrender...giving it up when the going gets tough." In Second Corinthians 12:7-10 Paul writes:

And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Paul was going through some kind of hardship. We do not know exactly what he was struggling with, but he called out to God for relief. Then the Lord told Him that in the areas Paul is weak, He will be Paul's strength! He will help any of us in the same way if we surrender to Him. His strength will be shown through His power helping us through our hardships!

God is our Father, and He loves us more than we could ever imagine! If we try to do things on our own strength, we will only end up hurting ourselves. He must rely on Him fully, so that others may see His strength in our lives and come to know the love we have in Lord Jesus!
