He's My Savior

"He's My Savior" is a joyful song Jaci sings about a quality of God we as Christians frequently overlook. People who have been Christians since their childhood hear how Jesus Christ is their Savior so often it become cliched and meaningless to them. But in the song, Jaci expresses a desire to show the world that the Lord is her Savior. She expresses His importance to her through some beautiful symbolism. "He's the fire in my soul, He melts my heart/And makes me whole/He's the air upon my breath/The gentle touch of holiness."

In the days of the Old Testament, few people knew what it meant for God to be their Savior better than David. David was pursued for many years by the wicked king of Israel, Saul. Samuel, a prophet, anointed David as Saul's successor, and the King couldn't bear the idea that his own child would not be his heir. Saul was a man warped by his own sin. One moment he would treat David with exceeding kindness. The next moment, Saul would thrust a spear at David, thankfully missing his target and planting the spear firmly in the wall.

Eventually Saul died in battle and David no longer had to run. David confronted many more enemies after Saul, and he escaped them and defeated them each time. God had never appeared to David or spoken directly to him as He did to Moses and other righteous people of generations past. However, David never forgot who rescued him from his enemies. Second Samuel 22:1-4 tell us David's own words:

Then David spoke to the LORD the words of this song, on the day when the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. 2And he said: "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; 3 The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence. 4 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies."

David was a hunted man. For many years, different people hunted him down and tried to take his life. Imagine being forced to wonder from city to city, knowing that the ruler of the land wants to see you dead and is marching out with his army against you. That is what David endured. He knew it was not his own cunning, his own craftiness that saved him. It was the Lord alone who was his Savior, and for that reason he worshiped the Lord with a passionate heart of thanksgiving.

Not many of us have had gone through life in fear of enemies hunting us down. What have we been saved from? In John 3:18-21, Jesus explains our situation:

18"He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God."

Jesus Christ has come in to the world to save us from darkness, from evil. Famous verse sixteen tells us, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." Whoever believes in Jesus as the crucified and risen Lord is saved from death. How easy it is to forget what terrible fate would await us if we had not put our faith in Him!

We were saved from death. Say to yourself, "He saved me from death." Think about it for a moment. If you have put your faith in Him, you are saved from death and have eternal life!

God is our Savior! He can save us from being condemned because of our sin, and, just as He saved David, He can still save us if others try to take our life. Do you really believe He is your Savior? Do you really want to tell the world it's true?
